Hung Vanngo’s best makeup tips!

Hun Vanngo is without a doubt, one of the most in demand celebrity makeup artist in the industry. Vanngo was a refugee, moving from his birthplace, Vietnam, to Canada at a young age. His blend of Western and Asian beauty creates a unique aesthetic that makes his work so praised by the industry. In 2006, Vanngo moved to New York City, working his way through the fashion industry, featuring in editorial magazines such as Vogue, i-D and Harper’s Bazaar. Vanngo also has worked for designer brands from Marc Jacobs to Lancôme. His hard work has led him to a loyal clientele, from models to musicians, including Bella Hadid, Karlie Kloss, and Selena Gomez.

Hun Vanngo is supportive of the social media movement, so much so that he started his own YouTube Channel 6 months ago, debuting with the model Emily Ratajkowski. His YouTube channel is where I have collated all of his pro-tips so I highly recommend you watch his videos to get inspiration for stunning looks for all skin-tones and age ranges.

SKINCARE

  1. Prep the skin with serum, eye cream and moisturiser
  2. Make sure the skin is well moisturised, even if you are doing a matte look
  3. When your moisturiser is on, use your hands to massage the nots out of your face and release tension
  4. If you put too much moisturiser on, you can use a sponge to blot the excess
  5. Put less moisturiser on your forehead because that is where you have the most natural shine

BASE:

  1. For a dewy look, still use a primer on the T-zone to ensure it is matte
  2. Wash your makeup sponge every time you use it
  3. The older/more used your sponge is, the better because you can mould it into any shape you like
  4. If you want more coverage from your foundation, pat it into the skin, if you want less, use light strokes
  5. Use concealer under the eyes, round the nose and under the outer portion of your bottom lip
  6. Use two shades of concealer; one that matches you skin tone for blemishes, round the nose and around the edges of the bottom lip and a lighter shade for the high points of your face; under the eyes, nose bridge, chin and forehead
  7. Leave some natural shadow on your lash line – do not take the concealer up to the very edge of your eye
  8. Bake under then eyes if you want to prevent eyeshadow fall out
  9. Use little powder under the eyes and on the T-zone

CHEEKS:

  1. Use cream contour to frame the face
  2. Press in cream blush using your fingertips as the warmth helps it blend into your skin
  3. Use powder bronzer to lock in the cream
  4. Use highlighter on your cheekbones, tip of the nose and cupids bow
  5. To create a seamless cheek, use your foundation brush or sponge to blend in the edges of your blush a contour

EYES:

  1. Use a dark eyeliner on the waterline and tight line for a more dramatic look. Do not use, however, if you do not want your eyes to look too small
  2. You can use your finger or a brush for cream eyeshadow but use a brush if you want more precision.
  3. Blend the edges of your eyeshadow with a lighter and softer colour than you have just used
  4. For hooded eyes: apple eyeshadow slightly heavier and higher up on their eyelid so when their eyes are open, you can still see the colour
  5. For hooded eyes: put more depth in the crease
  6. The intensity of the eyeshadow depends on the pressure you put on your skin, so use less pressure around the brow bone
  7. To elongate the inner and outer corner of the eye, use eyeliner and blend
  8. Use eyeshadow to set the eyeliner
  9. For precise eyeshadow placement, use a smudge brush

BROWS:

  1. Use waxier brow pencils as they work nicely against the skin
  2. To create a lifted effect: focus on elongating the tail of the brow
  3. To create depth: shade against the direction the eyebrow hairs grow
  4. To create individual hairs: Use a brow marker over an eyebrow pencil
  5. A common mistake: Choosing an eyebrow shade that is too dark – your eyebrows can be lighter than your hair colour

LIPS:

  1. Use a slightly darker lip liner to darken the outer corners of your lips
  2. Use a Matte lipstick to compliment a creamy/glossy eye
  3. For fuller lips: use a small amount of cream bronzer to mimic your natural lip line and then fill in with lip liner

EXTRA;

  1. Q-tips/cotton buds are your best friend! You can use them to blend as well as clean up product
  2. Although these tips may help you improve your makeup skills, there is no right or wrong – makeup is all personal choice and what suits you!

Top 6 books for any fashion lover

Although I don’t particularly believe in New Years resolutions because firstly, they rarely last and secondly, they put too much pressure on you; I think any excuse to spend more time reading is beneficial.

I was inspired by a close friend to challenge myself to read a book every month (she read thirty last year but I’m taking it slow) as not only does reading remove you from the anxieties of everyday life but it is also a great source of inspiration and relaxation.

Some may argue that fashion books do not count as they are mostly images but I have still spent many hours of the day studying fashion photography books.

With that being said, as a result of Covid-19 restrictions in many countries, it can be hard to fill the time, so being invested in a book is a good way to start. After all, there are few better feelings in life than discovering a book that truly resonates with you. This list includes the most mesmerising and educational fashion books I have read and continue to read if I am in need of some inspiration.

Alexander McQueen unseen £50

In this mesmerising book, we are given a behind the scenes look into the shows of one of the greatest fashion designers of all time, Lee McQueen. Not only does this book provide stunning visuals, thanks to Robert Fairer’s candid shots but it is also educational. This book is perfect for any McQueen fan, as Claire Wilcox gives a summary of each collections, which is a perfect way to expand your McQueen knowledge.

Chanel Catwalk (Prada, Louis Vuitton, Dior and Yves Saint Laurent) £50

The Catwalk book series are ideal for anyone with a love for a particular fashion house (Chanel is my favourite!) Chanel Catwalk is one of my all time favourite books as there are high quality photographs straight from the runway of Karl Lagerfeld’s reign (1983-2016). Moreover, Patrick Mauriès gives us a concise biography and a brief discussion of each collection, leaving the reader with a well rounded knowledge of the unforgettable mark Karl Lagerfeld left on the house of Chanel.

Inside Vogue £10.99

This book is perfect for anyone interested in fashion journalism as the author, Alexandra Schulman documents the centenary year at British vogue. Schulman was editor-at-large for British Vogue for 25 years, so there are very few experts with more experience in her field of fashion journalism. Inside Vogue provides the reader with a raw depiction of what it is like to work in the fashion industry, highlighting the ups and the downs, all written with Schulman’s witty sense of humour. Inside Vogue is written in the form of a chronological diary, so you are literally reading Schulman’s journal!

Teen Vogue handbook £16.99

The Teen Vogue handbook is ideal for any teenager with a desire to work in the fashion industry (like myself!) From fashion design, to journalism, to styling, the Teen Vogue handbook covers every aspect of the behind the scenes of the industry. Moreover, the book provides the reader with an insight into specific career paths from industry professionals, helping you decide which path you would like to take.

Vogue the covers £44.67

Vogue the covers is one of my all time favourite books. If you are obsessed with fashion magazines as much as I am (especially vintage issues) this is the ideal book for you. From the earliest issues of the 1900’s to modern day celebrity covers such as Reese Witherspoon, the evolution of Vogue is right in front of your eyes. As well as the stunning visuals, there is a brief overview of each decade, helping the reader to understand the context of each issue.

Megan Hess £10.99

For anyone with an interest in art, fashion or travel, Meghan Hess books are perfect for you! Hess’ illustrations are mesmerising, to such an extent that I used and recreated her work for my art GCSE! Megan Hess has published a range of books, from the history of Coco Chanel, travel Guides for fashion capitals and the beauty of French and Italian garments. These books are worth purchasing just to marvel at her work alone but Hess also provides the reader with punchy paragraphs to accompany her illustrations.

Making It in Manhattan £12.52

Caroline Vazzana is the ideal industry expert to gain advice from on how to break into the competitive fashion industry. Vazzana went from interning at Marie Claire and working at Teen Vogue to creating her own website MakingManhattan.com (she was even named the modern day Carrie Bradshaw!) Vazzana covers all the basics of how to gain access to the fashion world, including beautiful illustrations and insightful quotes along the way.

Charlotte Tilbury’s best makeup tips

Charlotte Tilbury has been at the forefront of the makeup industry for over 20 years. She has had the pleasure of doing the makeup of some of the biggest celebrities; from the beauty icon Kate Moss to actresses such as Nicole Kidman and Emma Roberts.

Tilbury launched her skincare and makeup brand in 2012 and since then, she has achieved great success as a powerful business woman. The passion for her brand is clear and she is responsible for the launch of many iconic products used by celebrities and the industry’s best makeup-artists. For example, her Pillow Talk collection, which includes the number one selling lipstick in North America. Her work is obviously admired by the beauty industry as she was not only awarded an MBE from Her Majesty the Queen but also Vogue’s best influencer brand. As well as this, In 2017, she was named Vogue contributing editor by Edward Enninful (the editor-at-large of British Vogue.) With this much recognition, I was inspired to research her make-up tips in order to achieve the glowing goddess appearance that all of her clients receive.

SKINCARE:

  1. Apply a lot of moisturiser and let it sink in
  2. Use the angel wings motion under the cheekbones and jawline to combat puffiness
  3. Tap the under eyes when applying eye cream
  4. When using a sheet mask, put over lips and décolletage to hydrate
From the left: Night Magic cream, Original miniature Magic cream

FACE:

  1. Use fingers or brushes, not sponges
  2. Leave time for your foundation to set naturally as this allows you to apply less powder and when you do apply it, your foundation does not move underneath
  3. Apply Charlotte’s product, wonder glow, over foundation if you desire an extra glowy complexion
  4. Do not apply any excess powder other than in the T-zone
  5. For contour: suck your cheekbones in and follow the hollow!
From the top: Film-star bronze and glow and Cheek to Chic blusher in ‘love glow’

EYES:

  1. Apply powder to the eyelids to smooth out any texture
  2. Do not use flat brushes for eyeshadow, only fluffy brushes
  3. If your face shape is longer, apply a thicker line of eyeshadow under your eye to compensate (and vice versa for a shorter face shape)
  4. Shimmer eyeshadow can be used on all ages – wear what makes you feel beautiful!
  5. To achieve the perfect feline flick: drag the inner corner down, draw a dot where you want your wing to end and connect
  6. When applying mascara, drag the lashes outwards for a cat eye effect
From back left: luxury eye quads in: Exaggereyes, The Golden Goddess, Pillow Talk and the Bella Sofia

BROWS:

  1. Elongate the brow shape to achieve cat eye
  2. Always brush up the brows and eyelashes

LIPS:

  1. Frequently sharpen your lip liner to achieve a precise shape
  2. Use Q tips to clean up any mistakes using foundation or moisturiser
From left to right: lip lustre in: Bardot beige (limited edition) Blondie, Hall of fame and Unleash me

EXTRA:

  1. Find your beauty icon for inspiration! (Mine are the 90s supermodels)
From left to right: Eyes to Mesmerise in Oyster Pearl and Verushka

CHARLOTTE’S BEDROOM EYE:

Charlotte Tilbury’s husband has never actually seen her without any makeup on! and this is how she does it:

  1. Cleanse face using multi miracle glow
  2. Apply magic cream
  3. Apply magic eye cream
  4. Use wonder glow for a dreamy complexion
  5. Apply a chocolate brown eyeliner
  6. Complete this sultry look with her full fat lashes mascara
